Warwickshire volunteers join scheme to help rehabilitate convicted criminals
Sex offenders are being given the chance to turn their lives around thanks to volunteers in Warwickshire.
A scheme has been set up that pairs offenders with groups of people in the county who want to help them.
They meet regularly, speak on the phone, and even go the pub as part of efforts to stop the offender from going back to their old ways.
In return the offender signs a contract with the circle of volunteers and is held accountable by them.
One volunteer called Ruth said that out of four of the offenders she has worked with two have gone on to transform their lives.
But when volunteers spotted the other pair behaving suspiciously they alerted police, and they were returned to custody.
She says the role is as much about community protection as it is about rehabilitating the offender – and urged others to give the volunteer scheme a go.
“It’s a hard sell,” she said. “But I would recommend it. If somebody is looking for some voluntary work that is a bit different to standing behind a shop counter then this might be for you.
“Some of my friends and family think it’s a bit weird but others are intrigued.
“I think it’s important to give sex offenders the chance to change”
